Kraken Black Spiced Rum is a dark, rich, and flavorful Caribbean rum infused with a blend of spices.

Named after the legendary sea monster, the Kraken, this rum is known for its bold character and distinctively shaped glass bottle, which has two little handle loops on it. The label has cool vintage-style artwork depicting the titular Kraken. It looks like it is out of a very old biology textbook. and the bottle describes the Kraken monster as a “bizarre and fierce sea creature as seen through the eyes of imagination”. Which is just a big octopus, it is depicted attacking a pirate ship.
Kraken Retail Price in Australia
I like to buy this occasionally when I see it on sale. It is on the higher end when it comes to my alcohol-drinking budget. It is typically $72 for 700ml, but you can often find it on sale for around $60. The 1L bottle is usually around $97 at RRP.
Kraken Black Spiced Rum Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep, almost black in colour with a slight brownish hue.
- Aroma: Notes of caramel, toffee, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove.
- Taste: A smooth yet robust flavour profile featuring molasses, vanilla, dark chocolate, and warm spices.
- Finish: Long, slightly sweet, with lingering spice and a hint of smokiness.

- Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 47%
- Origin: Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean, made from molasses and aged in oak barrels for one to two years.
Best Ways to Enjoy:
- Neat or on the rocks to savour its rich flavours.
- Mixed in cocktails like a Kraken & Cola, Dark ‘N’ Stormy, or Black Mojito.
- Used in tiki or winter spice-based drinks due to its bold spice profile.
Kraken Black Spiced Rum is popular for its smooth drinkability and bold, pirate-inspired branding, making it great for parties, especially if it’s pirate-themed. Yes, I’ve been to pirate-themed parties before, however back then we only had Captain Morgan to get us in the mood, I think Kraken is definitely the go-to pirate rum of the 2020s.
Verdict – Very good, but never pay full price!
