DJ&A Shiitake Mushroom Crisps – Smoked Chilli & Garlic Review

DJ&A sure like making mushroom snacks. I’ve previously reviewed their Smoked Chilli & Garlic Shiitake Mushroom Jerky, now I’m reviewing that exact same flavour, but in “crisp” form.

In the case of mushroom crisps, something I’ve never tried before now. I have to say, these are really good. They are very crunchy, but the texture is hard to compare. It’s crunchy like Twisties, prawn crackers or Cheetos but dense and non-porous, as mushrooms are quite solid objects.

Being denser than the chips mentioned above, they feel to be more filling per piece than a similarly sized potato or rice product. This may be why they come in a snaplock pouch, making it easy to save some for later.

The standout feature of this product, making it a good alternative to potato chips is that it contains 40% fat than most fried potato chips. This is achieved by using a lower-temperature cooking process, and I suppose not being potatoes also helps.

My History with Mushrooms

The king of elephants had eaten a bad mushroom-Babar the Elephant

Given I’ve already talked about this company in my jerky review, I can’t help but share that I’m amazed I’m even eating mushrooms so regularly. As a kid, I was terrified of them. In the stories about Babar the Elephant, the original king of the elephants died from eating a poisonous mushroom in the forest. This made me scared of mushrooms and anything in the fungi family until I was about 16 years old. I guess that’s why I’m also really into truffle products now too. Catching up on lost time.
